Solar Pond, to aerate your pond or to generate electricity
Solar pond - Anybody who has built or maintained a pond or aquarium knows
the importance of water aeration. Instead of using electricity to power these systems, solar power is used, thus ponds using this technology are
tagged as solar ponds. Sustaining the underwater plant life as well as fish depends greatly on continual aeration.
The use of solar power is the most economical means of powering such systems. Electricity may run too high since the system needs to run on a
continual basis 24 hours a day. Solar ponds are efficient and self sustaining in that respect.
The idea is that a pond that holds one million gallons of water only holds around 2 to 6 pounds (maximum) of oxygen, which isn't much and can
be consumed quickly without proper aeration.
Without getting too technical, solar pond aeration systems work like this:
An upright flow is created in the water. Usually, unsafe gases and substances are naturally deposited near to the bottom. The current produced
sucks this dirty water at the surface via air bubbles. These bubbles contain and release the gases from the lower pond water while simultaneously
supplying oxygen to the surface water.
The result is called aeration and is completely powered by a solar panel attached somewhere that gets direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a
day.
The solar panel can captures and stores the energy produced in batteries. Such configuration allows solar pumps to keep running all night. The battery power is regenerated each day by simple sunlight and costs you nothing
at all to run.
You should select a solar pond aeration system that can be installed by you. A good one should require no rewiring or installation costs. Some
professional solar systems systems can be difficult to set-up and require qualified installers. But in most cases you can do it
yourself.
Salinity gradient
Another totally different type of solar pond is used to produce power for a variety of purposes like refrigeration, heating, sea water
desalination or simply for storing solar energy. in fact, such ponds act as very big and low-cost solar collectors
Put simply, a solar pond is a lake which gathers and stores the solar energy. It is made of multiple layers of salt to increase the water
density. What take place then, though, is not at all as simple. Based on certain principles concerning heat loss from liquids and gasses, the
water present in a solar pond gets hotter and hotter and can be stored without loss of the heat. This obtained energy is stored as simple heat of
around 70 to 80 degrees and has many uses. The most common application is to use this solar energy to run turbines that generate electricity.
Thus the cost of electricity generation is lowered and is more efficient.
We are finding more ways to harness solar power. Solar ponds have effective applications we have found to use it for the sake of our
environment.
